Getting back to ME

It took me a long time to admit it, but I am addicted to Facebook. For years, I felt like a slave to social media and have somehow lost who I am. It felt like the real me was locked in a dungeon within myself, watching as a random, egotistical, narcissistic shell interacted on my behalf.

Though I was engaged, I often felt empty, preachy and judgmental. I was bombarded with pop culture elements that seemed frivolous, unimportant and added little of quality to my life. The final straw for me was being bombarded with negative comments from others, violent fight videos, and reality shows I never watched but knew all the details of.

I had long lost who I actually am, who I actually liked being: the tea drinking, philosophical, book reading, incense burning, poet who was out of touch with pop culture, but in touch with the things that  mattered most. I needed to get back to ME.

On the morning of June 21, I simply stopped using social media. The last couple of days have been so peaceful, and I've been more productive. I will admit, it has been a little difficult knowing how to be with my own thoughts and resist the urge to post an interesting observation instantly to the world. However, I will find another way to turn those thoughts into something more useful to me.

I decided to disengage from social media and focus on the things that make me happy and enrich the quality of my life. I recognize the usefulness and importance of social media and having an online presence. Connecting my writing and projects with others has been a major part of my social media experience.

So, my social media profiles will remain active and managed by someone other than myself. Though I will not be responding to posts, messages, or event invites, I will post from my blog, and submit posts from time to time that will be posted on my behalf. This will allow me to still share my projects with all of my supporters and remain connected, but distant enough to recapture ME. Outside of text, email, or seeing me in person in the city or at a performance, this blog will be the best place to remain connected to me and what I'm up to. Thank you for continuing to support me. I hope you will follow my blog and stay with me on this journey.

Peace
